Communion exhortation - 7/1/07

Text - 1 Samuel 23, when Jonathan comes out to meet David, and Saul pursues David

This is our En Gedi, our oasis in the wilderness. We are pursued hotly by our enemy the devil. But God is faithful. He provides a way of escape – a spring to run to and be fed and protected.

Just as Jonathan came out to David in the wilderness, so the Holy Spirit of Jesus comes forth from our heavenly home, out to us in this desert, and He is with us. The roles are reversed now – the Son of David is on the throne in Zion, and we as Jonathan are in the desert. But it is the same picture. We claim Jesus as our king, and declare that we will stand next to him, reflecting His image as a copy.

And the Spirit with us now, strengthens us, joining us with our King Jesus, helping us renew covenant with God, pledge loyalty to His Son, profess faith that He is the One through whom God protects and saves us.

We are not just reminded of all this. David did not simply call Jonathan to mind in the desert. Our sin is not just in our heads; we sin with our hands, our tongues, our bodies, and so our salvation too is not just mental but tangible and public. David and Jonathan really met there, and were strengthened. And so you too truly meet with Jesus here – having confessed Your sin, having heard His Word, and now reaffirming your union with Him in this sacrament.
