I left out a couple lines - anybody want to explain the last 3 lines for me?
Bono's poetry makes very clear for me the distinction between prose as declarative and poetry as allusive. Poetry alludes to things, and sometimes it doesn't quite get you there...
There is a case made by some that Judas repented by returning the 30 pieces of silver and saying he had betrayed innocent blood. But since he committed suicide he would have to wait (unlike) Peter for his forgiveness and restoration.
ReplyDeleteLast 3 lines sounds like Judas' last moments, returning the money and yet ending it all. How can you live when you realize you've just killed the Messiah? Sin left a blackness infront of his eyes so dark he couldn't see the light of Christ's forgiveness through it all, and was left to despair until the end of the world (boy, that sounds like purgatory! Too much Catholic influence in Bono?)
