Proverbs 4:1-2
Hear, my children, the instruction of a father,
And give attention to know understanding;
2 For I give you good doctrine:
Do not forsake my law.
Solomon is teaching his
children with these proverbs. God is showing Himself a father to us children,
too. We must learn first to be taught by the Lord in His Word, before we can
teach and parent our own children. We all learn by imitation and example. Over
time, children pay attention to what their parents give attention. This is why
Paul tells Timothy to give attention to the public reading of Scripture. Pay
attention, listen, to what God says. It is getting harder and harder to give
attention in this world of Netflix and facebook, texts and tweets. Are we
giving God the attention He deserves? Are we teachable, willing to change
according to His Word? He gives us good doctrine there, vs 2, and we cannot
forsake it.
